Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men by increasing blood flow to the penis, which can cause an erection.
Cialis is a pill that was approved in 1998. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow into the penis.
Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs were approved in 1998, but Cialis was removed from the market in 2003 due to safety concerns.
"The black box warning may be a bit exaggerated," said Kline. "If you take more Viagra than you think is safe, you will be more likely to die."
Viagra is not a new drug in the pharmaceutical world, and there have been a handful of drug trials to test its efficacy in humans.
In clinical trials, men taking Viagra had a lower incidence of serious side effects than men taking placebo pills.
"The side effects reported in these studies are generally the same," said H. Douglas Gillette, medical director for the University of Wisconsin. "These are the same side effects that men experiencing erectile dysfunction are experiencing."
The study authors noted that men who took Viagra were only slightly more likely to have serious side effects, such as:

"This is a new and important finding," said H. Douglas Gillette, medical director of the Institute for Drug Development.

A Viagra study published in the British Medical Journal suggested that Cialis was not associated with a higher incidence of heart attack or stroke in men taking Viagra.
GINA H. Kline, associate professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, also found no increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
